Do You Ever Wonder?
It’s mid-January and we were still at our temporary home. At the beginning of the morning Cody came to me and asked if he and Cynthia could talk with us after the morning gathering was complete. “Absolutely”, I said
So we had finished packing up and everyone was gone. There’s no chairs or anything so we sit down on the curb under a tree. We’ve known Cody and Cynthia for some time now but not in any real meaningful way… just casually as we see them most every weekend at breakfast. Cody speaks first and says “We don’t want to live like this anymore”. Nearly instantly I began to pray silently as I listen to Cody and Cynthia tell their story. My prayer is I want God to be part of this conversation. They tell us a bit of their stories and the difficulties they have faced over the years.
They’ve been living on the streets for the last seven years. In all this time they have also dealt with the issue of crystal methamphetamine use. They’re tired. Hopeless. Homeless. They ask if there is any help they can receive.
We are wrapping up the conversation telling Cody and Cynthia we’d begin looking into some programs for them. We tell them this is too big for us. We need God’s guidance and help. So we stand there and hold hands… in the parking lot, and invite God into this relationship. We acknowledge we are not able to do this on our own and we invite Jesus to walk with us on this journey. We all agree and say “AMEN!”
Nine days later both Cody and Cynthia are in a drug rehab facility. Here’s part of the challenge. The facility for men has a 21-day crystal meth subsidized program for men. The women’s side of things had the same program… but it wasn’t subsidized. It was going to cost $840 to get Cynthia into this program.
Both Cody and Cynthia have been clean and sober for 70 days now. They are deeply grateful for all those who helped this happen through supporting Prodigal’s Home. They are deeply grateful God has pulled them from the miry clay.
There are still many challenges they face. But they know they will not face them alone. They know God is with them… for them. They know we are with them. And they know you are with them.
So, if you ever wonder what we are up to these days… if you ever wonder if your support and prayers make any difference I’d say wonder no longer. You are making a difference.
