Prodigal’s Home - Serving the homeless of Phoenix, AZ

Identification, News

March 24, 2009

Finally…

My last update to you was about our friend “gray hair Scotty” who has been without any form of ID for nearly 10 years.

Kim has been working with local, state, and federal agencies in order to help Scotty get some form of ID to help him on his journey.  Without ID he cannot work, get any sort of benefits or aid, and is unable to get anything but emergency medical care.

The last I communicated to you was the conversation in which my wife said “hopefully… he’s been in prison here”.  This was in hopes of getting some kind of ID from the Arizona Department of Corrections so she could move forward in the process.

Well… he wasn’t in prison in Arizona.  Dang.

So she continues to work with different agencies but to absolutely no avail.  It has now been over one year and she is no further along than when she began.  Today she took Scotty to Project Homeless Connect.  It’s an event led by our friend Joe Razo that helps homeless get many of the services they so desperately require. And it’s all in one location!  Representatives from many different government agencies as well as many shelters and rehab facilities are all in one place in order to help those in need in our society.

And it’s not going very well.  Scotty explains to the representatives from MVD about his problem and they are not so sympathetic to his plight.

And then Kim jumps in.  She explains the whole situation… and… nothing.  Sorry, but we can’t help you.

The representative asks if Kim wants to speak to a supervisor and Kim pounces on the opportunity.

And she tells the story… again.  And once again she is told no.  But Kim is compelled… devoted really… in serving Jesus Christ and she does it by helping the least of these.

And she won’t take no for an answer.  So she says “LOOK!  We have a problem here and we need your help”.  And ONCE AGAIN tells the story of her friend Scotty and the struggle.

And then something happens.  A breakthrough.  A glimmer of hope.  The supervisor relents  and says she would give a 3-month “temporary” ID to Scotty.  Kim KNOWS what this means.  They issue the temporary ID and Kim, with Scotty in tow, literally runs to the other places to get him every single piece of ID he has been without for the last ten years.  He has a birth certificate.  He has his social security card.  He’s applied for AHCCCS.  He was able to get some food stamps to help him get back on his feet.  And with those IDs in place she was able to go back and get his PERMANENT ID!  All in an afternoon.  This very afternoon.

Scotty doesn’t know what to think.  At the beginning of the day it was just another day to be disappointed.  But God had other plans today.

And Scotty is simply beside himself.  He is filled with hope and wonder and why someone would do this for him.  And Kim tells him why.

He says he can now have meal with his son and be able to provide the meal.  He says he will be able to change in healthy and positive ways.

Two-thousand years ago Jesus walked this planet.  He performed a lot of miracles.  Many believe miracles no longer happen.

Scotty would disagree.
